A remedy for Tuesdays: Cure restaurant review

Cure, located in the Rochester Public Market, is something you could easily walk past. For starters, it's in the Rochester Public Market. Is that any place for a French eatery? The public market is surrounded by cafes, bakeries, and, well, a farmer's market...it's actually a perfect place for a French restaurant.

I have never had French food before and for sure didn't know what it consisted of, but when the editor of the magazine you're interning at invites you to come day drink with her and a fellow writer friend, you comply. Yesterday was La Fete de la Musique, a festival of music, in France and is a significant annual cultural day throughout the country. The tradition consists of music celebrations all day on the day of the solstice.

To celebrate the day here in 'Murica, Cure paid tribute to the beloved custom by creating a special menu for the day of Tartines, open-faced French sandwiches, and samples of each white, rosé and red wine. The three Tartines offered were a duck, ratatouille, and a marmalade dessert sandwich with special French butter (I would have also gladly taken three of those to go). Cure catered to my vegetarian needs by giving me two of the ratatouille sandwiches to which I devoured both, pairing it with my red.

The space of the restaurant is simple and minimalistic but you'll find yourself staring at every inch of the place multiple times in case you missed an artsy black and white blown up photograph mounted on the wall. The bar is located in the back of the restaurant and boasts delicious cocktails I'll be trying before the summer is over. The restaurant prides itself in sourcing its food from local sources - so local the restaurant gets its bread next door at Flour City Bread Co. (Rochester is known as both the Flower City and the Flour City), arguably the best bread in the city.

I haven't been to any other French restaurants so I can't say it's the best one out there, but I can say it's the best one I've eaten at. The place is so cutesy and so French, I half-expected everyone to just light up a cigarette right in the middle of lunch inside (and it's what I half-wanted). Cure is a remedy for all.
