| If you want entertainment watch Lasell men's volleyball. |
As I mentioned in my first blog post, I am from Syracuse, New York. And to tell you what that really means: it means that I bleed orange, men's basketball is the most important thing from November to March and the university is so much more known than the actual city.
I never really thought of Syracuse as Syracuse University until I came to college and people constantly asked me why I didn't attend SU to study journalism. "Well why didn't you study at ______?" is what I would shriek back with the name of the college that was closest to their hometown. That is when I truly realized SU is more important than the city. Being from Syracuse means I am from Syracuse University.
And the university is only as important as it is because of the Division 1 sports. I grew up watching games on TV, attended a few games here and there and couldn't leave the house without being bombarded by bright orange tshirts screaming some sort of athletic team with a logo and Otto the Orange printed on it.
When I attended my first Division III men's volleyball game I was surprised at the energy in the room. For starters, my high school gymnasium is probably bigger than the Athletic Center here with quadruple the seating for audiences. And for the obvious: I'm from Syracuse.
I loved that both the crowd, filled with students and parents alike, and players could get so excited for something that had little influence in the area, or even the school community. There are no hardcore followers of Lasell men's volleyball (no offense, Lasell men's volleyball) and our college surely would not celebrate the win of their GNAC title if they won, unlike something you would find at SU.
So hats off to you Lasell for getting so pumped about DIII sports. Keep doing you.
